In the realm of collegiate athletics, few positions carry as much weight as that of an athletics director. Kathy Kroupa, the recently appointed athletics director at Lynn University, embodies a commitment to student-athletes that goes far beyond wins and losses. Her journey from a student-athlete to a seasoned professional has equipped her with a unique perspective—one that emphasizes holistic development, mental well-being and post-graduate success for Lynn's student-athletes.

A tight-knit environment

With over three decades of experience as a student-athlete, coach and administrator, Kroupa brings a wealth of knowledge to her role. Lynn was more than just a job opportunity for Kroupa—it was a chance to join an institution that prioritizes its strong local community and cultivates global perspectives.

When Kroupa arrived at Lynn in 2021, she quickly became an integral part of the athletics department as the deputy director of athletics, eventually assuming the role of athletics director in December 2023. Kroupa now oversees the department comprised of 19 NCAA Division II sports teams and approximately 40 staff members, all while prioritizing meaningful relationships and providing unwavering support to student-athletes.

"The most rewarding part is really about developing students," said Kroupa. "We're able to guide them through a transformational time in their lives, supporting their success not only in athletics but also academically and as individuals."

At Lynn, Kroupa finds many advantages in the smaller athletics community—a tight-knit environment where every individual matters. With approximately 400 student-athletes, Kroupa and her team can focus on personalized attention, ensuring that each student-athlete receives the support they require to excel.

Healthy minds, healthy athletes

Central to Kroupa's philosophy is the overall well-being of student-athletes. She acknowledges the rigorous demands placed on them, dedicating significant time throughout the year to their respective sports. In response, she and her team have implemented comprehensive support systems, including partnerships with academic support programs and leveraging Lynn's state-of-the-art Snyder Center for Health and Wellness. Kroupa's proactive approach involves promoting personalized counseling sessions at the Snyder Center, organizing panel discussions centered on mental health and fostering conversations about transitioning from student-athlete to a professional career.

"It's crucial for students to understand that they have top-down support. When I stepped into this role, I made it a priority to maintain close connections with the students," said Kroupa. "I attend their practices and check in with them periodically. They know who I am, where I am, and where I like to sit at their games."

Beyond the immediate focus on student-athlete welfare, Kroupa's vision extends to long-term goals for Lynn's athletics program. She envisions championships and success within the competitive Sunshine State Conference while maintaining a supportive and collaborative team culture. This year alone, the Fighting Knights celebrated their 50th conference championship, clinched their 15th NCAA individual National Championship and saw 11 programs represent Lynn in NCAA Championship competition.

Recipe for success

Celebrating academic achievements alongside athletic successes is also a powerful component of Kroupa's recipe, showcasing equal value for academia and personal growth.

"We thrive on celebrating their academic achievements," said Kroupa. "We started Lynn's chapter of the National Athletes Honor Society called Pi Alpha Sigma to recognize scholastic wins and reinforce that academic achievement is just as important as celebrating athletic wins."

As Kroupa looks ahead to the future, she envisions exciting plans that underscore Lynn's continued commitment to providing a top-notch athletics experience. In fact, Lynn's 2025 strategic plan is already well underway and promises enhancements to several athletics facilities. While some of the plans are still being finalized, there is considerable excitement surrounding the comprehensive master plan.

These enhancements, combined with Kroupa's steadfast dedication to student-athlete development, set the stage for a thriving athletics program at Lynn—one that empowers student-athletes to excel both on and off the field.

From cheering on the Fighting Knights courtside to fostering personalized relationships, Kroupa proves her passion for student-athlete success through every initiative and interaction. Her unwavering commitment to creating a supportive, empathetic and holistic environment ensures that Lynn's student-athletes have the tools and resources they need to thrive in their athletics endeavors and beyond.
