Lynn University's athletic programs have seen remarkable growth in recent years. As part of its 2025 strategic plan, the university began making key investments in improving and expanding the role athletics play in student life. With more opportunities than ever before, student participation is growing across varsity, club and intramural sports.
Since 2018, Lynn added five new sports teams, demonstrating a strategic investment in competitive opportunities for student-athletes. The additions include men's cross country, men's swimming, men's track and field, women's track and field and women's lacrosse. These teams not only diversify Lynn's athletic offerings, but they also create new pathways for student-athletes to compete and represent the Fighting Knights on a national stage.
The expansion led to a significant uptick in national success for Lynn. By 2018, the university had earned 23 national championships. In 2023, that number climbed to 27 championships. More than just a reflection of Lynn’s athletic investment, these victories boost the university’s overall reputation.
Lynn Head Swimming Coach Niki Alvarez says that, in her time at Lynn, she has seen the reputation of the entire school rise as the athletics program grew.
"When I first started at Lynn, we were the new kids on the block," said Alvarez. "Today, our Fighting Knights are recognized as a force to be reckoned with. Lynn coaches work hard to help students balance their studies and their athletic pursuits, and it's exciting to see how in-demand our programs have become."
The university has also seen impressive growth in its intramural sports program, which provides recreational and social athletic opportunities for the entire student body. Since 2018, Lynn expanded intramural sports offerings to include flag football, soccer, basketball, kickball, tennis, pickleball, sand volleyball and ultimate frisbee. Additionally, club sports at Lynn have expanded with the inclusion of Lynn's Club Ice Hockey—for the first time in the history of the program, the hockey team headed to the AAU College Hockey Nationals in 2025. In addition, the team captured its first-ever win during the Top 20 pool play in Nationals, defeating the ACC champion Wake Forest Demon Deacons by a score of 5–4. These activities allow students of all skill levels to engage in healthy competition, build a campus community and a chance to participate in more specialized athletic interests outside of varsity play.
Intramural participation reached new heights this year, more than doubling from over 500 participants last year to over 1,000. This surge in athleticism is a boon for campus culture, contributing to an active student lifestyle and drawing more prospective students to Lynn.
As Lynn looks to the future, its robust and evolving athletic programs will continue to play a key role in student and campus life. Whether a student is looking to compete with championship-level varsity teams, thriving intramural leagues or enthusiastic clubs, Lynn Athletics offers something for everyone.
